Red.i.Design began helping small businesses in the spring of 2004. Our president (Travis Schaffer) grew up in a small family business and started his sales career with a small company in the early 1990’s.
During his 15 year career in sales, marketing, and management he spent just 3 years working for a large corporation. During these years he watched as this large company provided generally poor customer service, while still crushing many small businesses around them. “How do they do this?” He thought. So he watched and learned.
Eventually he realized that small businesses had a huge disadvantage. While large corporations hired huge marketing firms to build websites and put together radio and print ads, small businesses threw ads together as best they could. This usually ended in poorly designed, unprofessional advertising and web design that too often made small business ads into something that the local community just got a good laugh out of.
Then in early 2003 Travis took responsibility for a struggling pest control company. As he had seen before the company worked hard to deliver great service but it was loosing ground to large corporate competitors. He realized that the company was making the classic small business mistake, they were delivering A+ service but had a C- image.
Travis sat down and laid out a turn around plan for the company. The top 3 items were:
1. Redesign uniforms and all customer communication forms.
2. Create print marketing materials that tell people what makes us better.
3. We need a website that really communicates with customers.
…And so Travis started looking for ways to get all of these done. What he discovered was that he wasn’t going to get much help. He either could not afford the help he needed, or the help he found seemed generic and fit poorly with the companies needs. So he did the only thing he could. He did it all himself. It took late nights, long hours, and a willingness to learn. But in the end, it worked. In just two years the company was on it’s way back. “The big corporate competitors started losing accounts to us instead of the other way around.”
That’s when inspiration struck. Travis realized that he could help smaller companies, and Red.i.Design was born.
Why the name Red.i.Design?
Travis’ answer “Because I seemed to get my best work done late at night, so it just seemed to fit.”
